Which Dyson ‘Universal’ Adaptor Do I Need?

Dyson adaptors! A Big subject whether you call it an adaptor, an adapter or a converter.

Confusingly, Dyson market what they call a ‘universal adaptor’ which is actually nothing of the sort.

So which Dyson tool adaptor do you need? One size doesn’t fit all. Despite what some will tell you.

Dyson V7, V8 or V10 owners, read >>this article<< instead.

Dyson CY22, CY23, Light Ball, Small Ball and Big Ball Cinetic owners read >>this article instead<<.

First, I should explain what the Dyson ‘universal adaptor’ is actually for. It is to adapt older pre-ball Dysons to use newer Dyson tools such as the various mini turbine tools, the anti-tangle tool and the newer multi tools.

Dyson’s ‘universal’ adaptor looks like this:

dyson universal adaptor

What that actually does is make machines that take this type of tool:

Dyson tool adaptor

Suit accessories that have this type of fitting:

Dyson late type tool fitting

Now I don’t know about you, but if I own a DC01, I am not going to be dashing out to buy the latest dog grooming tool or anti-tangle tool from Dyson at forty quid or so.

I will be quite happy using my original tried and tested three tools, brush, stair and crevice, and to do so with a Dyson DC01, I will need the adaptor that came with it that looks like this:

Dyson DC01 adaptor

If I buy a Dyson flexi crevice tool or a stubborn dirt brush, I will get three adaptors in there, one of which looks like this:

Dyson tool converter

So already you see that there is no ‘universal’ Dyson tool adaptor as such. It is a misnomer. It is dependent upon application.

And lets not forget that there are no adaptors available that suit the DC15, DC18, DC11 or a host of other models that had unique tool fittings. So ‘universal’ becomes even more of a misnomer at this point.

But lets imagine what adaptor you haven’t seen here up to now that Dyson will tell you isn’t available. That is one that converts the machines with the later crescent half moon tool fitting to be able to use the older tried and tested three-piece toolkit that came with the Dysons DC01, DC02, DC03, DC04, DC05, DC07 and DC14.

We discussed the forthcoming availability of such an adaptor in this article: Dyson Tool Adaptor: New Style Crescent Fitting to Old Style 32mm Tools and even published prototype pictures.

If you spend £300 or £400 on a new Dyson vacuum cleaner, it might be nice instead of the multi-tool supplied, that you can use your trusty old brush tool, crevice tool and stair tool that you have from your previous model. Why did they change that fitting you may ask? Why indeed.

More to the point, why didn’t they make a universal adaptor that allowed owners of Dyson models DC16, DC19T2, DC22, DC23, DC24, DC25, DC26, DC27, DC28, DC29, DC30, DC31, DC32, DC33, DC34, DC35, DC36, DC37, DC38, DC39, DC40, DC41, DC42, DC43, DC44, DC45, DC46, DC47, DC48, DC49, DC50, DC51, DC52, DC53, DC54, DC55, DC56, DC58, DC59, DC63, DC65 and DC66 to use the older style tools?

The ‘universal adaptor’ Dyson sell doesn’t do that.

But this one does.

Dyson Universal Adaptor

And for under five quid you can be the proud owner of what might be more properly described as a Dyson universal adaptor.

  1. Great site!

I have a DC07 animal, which I liberated from someone’s trash and refurbished. There were no tools.

I can get a Tangle Free Turbine Tool for $20 (sorry I don’t know what that is in pounds) on ebay. However, I cannot seem to find any data on (or even if) there is an adapter for this. Dyson claims it doesn’t exist.

    Can you help?

I already know that the DC07 end is 32mm, but I don’t know what the tool end is. Dyson claims that the Tangle Free tool will fit DC19s and newer(except DC24 & cordless.) This seems unlikely. Are they including adapters with it when purchased new?

    Thank you,

  2. I think you need this adaptor: http://manchestervacs.co.uk/Dyson/Dyson-tool-adaptor-912270-01

  3. I have a Dyson DC56 made especially for Costco and need a universal attachment for my attachments from another brand other than Dyson. The attachments that I have are for micro dusting, etc. Will the Dyson tool adaptor 912270-01 work for this?

  4. To use non Dyson 32mm attachments on your DC56 you want this one: http://manchestervacs.co.uk/Dyson/dyson-old-new-tool-adaptor

To use your Dyson DC56 attachments on other machines with a 32mm fitting, you want 912270-01. Or this: http://manchestervacs.co.uk/Dyson/Dyson-tool-adaptor-912270-01

  5. I have a new Dyson V6 Plus. I need an adaptor that will fit common vacuum tool parts like a micro vacuum tool, or just a universal crevice tool. Can you help me?

  6. The one here should fit a V6. Can you tell me the first three digits of the serial number to be sure?

  7. MB5

  8. The one I linked should be fine for a US model V6 Plus.

  9. Hi

I have a dc56 what would I need to be able to use it with normal carpet floor head?

  10. I have an old DC05 (like this https://www.google.co.za/search?q=dc05&client=safari&hl=en-gb&prmd=ivn&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjOoa-sqMTRAhVnL8AKHYL6Ax4Q_AUIBygB&biw=414&bih=628#imgrc=ipSBUVg4ygGY_M%3A) and bought the following replacement turbobrush head (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dyson-DC05-Vacuum-Cleaner-Turbine/dp/B00627YMG8).

It seems that I need an adapter. Can you please advise on the correct one ?

  11. The one pictured above with the silver button would theoretically do that Chris, but I am unsure without trying one if it would have sufficient clearance to clip on. Better to get an original DC05 turbo brush instead (the DC02 one also fits). I believe Manchester Vacs still has some new ones.

Will this adaptor enable me to use my flat out head (came with a DC19) with my DC 37 animal turbine which has the crescent fitting tools?

  13. Angus Black on May 6th, 2017 at 4:09 pm

Hard to say without seeing it. DC19 have two possible tool fittings.

  14. I have a Dyson DC11 turbine head that I’d like to use with my new DC37 origin. What tool should I be using? I’m confused because most ebay listings state “Please note: This adapter will NOT fit the DC05 motorhead, DC08, DC11, DC15, DC18, DC19 standard, DC20 and DC21.”

    Eg: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/DYSON-DC36-DC37-DC38-DC39-Tool-Adapter-Converter-Use-with-Older-Tools-/231551791202?hash=item35e98ff062:g:Ke4AAOSwPYZU3hbf

  15. You are going to struggle with that, I am not aware of a reliable conversion to do this.

  16. For Dyson V7 and V8 owners, you want to read >>this post<<.

  17. Hi, i have a dc54 animal and will be getting the big ball cinetic animal in a few days but was wondering if i could use the parts (tangle free turbine tool etc) from the dc54 on the big ball?

  18. I believe the new Big Ball Cinetic machines come with that adaptor already in the box.

  19. Hi, I have a Dyson DC07 Upright and have recently acquired a new Tangle Free Turbine Tool that came with a Dyson Big Ball Animal Cylinder. So, I want to use this new attachment with my old Dyson. Is there an adaptor for this? Thank you Dyson Medic!

  20. Julie, there are two versions of tool fitting for the Big Ball, email here with the question. Send also new serial number.

  21. Hi, I have a DC19 Turbine Australian model and the original turbo head needs replacing. I ordered a generic one (spares2go) that said it was for the DC19 but I think it’s for the UK version and doesn’t fit. The head looks like it goes on newer Dysons with the crescent connection and it came with an adapter like the first picture shown on this article (“universal” adapter).

What adapter do I need to get this to fit on my DC19? Does one exist?

I measured the small tools from the DC19 (rhey are a push fit not clip on like the turbine head) and I’m pretty sure they are 34mm. I think I need an adapter to go from a crescent tool to 34mm or an adapter to attach to the bigger end of the adapter I have which has an OD of about 37mm.

    Any help greatly appreciated.

  22. I think I need a 32mm (inner diameter of the “universal” adapter) to 34mm (size of my dyson tools that fit) adapter?

  23. DC19s have two types of head. The generic types with the Euro fitting fit one type and not the other. If you have the other you need a genuine head as nobody makes one that fits.

  24. At this moment I have a dc29 which is working quite good.
But i got a turbine head for a dc20. I bought it online not realizing they were incompatible
Are there any adapters which I can use to use the turbine head of the dc20 on my dc29 ?

  25. Hi there, I have a Dyson DC08 which I use in the garage for cleaning the car. I want to be able to use the newer car cleaning attachments but am confused about which adaptor I need. Can you help.

  26. Great sight,I have a Dyson DC65 with all attachments and am looking at buying a Dyson V6 Trigger cordless. Which adaptor do i need to get so i can use my attachments.

  27. Really helpful site!
I have a Dyson Lightball Multi Floor which is a fairly new model so Dyson don’t yet produce tools for it other than the few supplied with it. I have tools for the V6 Trigger Pro handheld & also from an old DC01 vacuum. Are there any adaptors that will make either of these tool types fit the Lightball?

  28. Paul, yes, see here: Dyson Light Ball, Big Ball & Cinetic Tool Adaptor Set

  29. I have a Dyson DC07 and have just purchased a Dyson Ball Multifloor 2. Do you have an adapter that will allow me to use the old tools on the new machine? Thanks

  30. If it is the very new one with red button tools, you want this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B078GXSHPC/

  31. Hello, I recently purchased the adaptor shown above which allows a person to apparently use old tools with a newer Dyson. I have a DC 37. I was hoping to be able to use the older style hard floor tool that hash a central hole for suction. The adaptor did not work. The older hard floor tool had a button and internal catch and the new adaptor as is shown above is imply a straight pipe with no ridges on the end that is supposed to attach to an older part. i attempted to paste a link to a photo of the tool but your site will not allow me to paste it in and issues a copyright warning popup . DO you know of an adaptor for this type of tool?

  32. You’d be better asking that at dysonforums.com where you can upload a photo.

  33. Thank you.

  34. Hello Angus,

I have a DC39 animal with the simply brilliant articulating hard floor tool: we’ve bought a V8 and I’m really disappointed with/don’t like the soft roller cleaner head for hard floors that came with it. How can I use the articulating hard floor tool from the dc39 on my new V8? That will be the best of both worlds for me!
    Thanks in advance

  35. There isnt an adaptor that I know of that fits the articulating floor tool due to the two locating ridges on it. You could rejig a V8/V6 adaptor if you ground off the locating ridges and araldited the adaptor on to the tool – that would work.

  36. Hi Angus

I already own a DC39 animal and have recently purchased a V7 car and boat handheld

Is there an adapter to connect the tools from my DC39 animal to my V6 handheld?

  37. Shak, read this: http://dysonmedic.co.uk/dyson-v8-tool-adaptors-use-your-old-tools-with-your-dyson-v7-and-v8/

  38. Hi I have a Dyson dC44 animal I wanted to buy the turbine tangle free head will it fit my Dyson or do I need an attachment and would you know which one I would need
    Regards fiona

  39. It wont work too well on a cordless, but the tangle tool will fit it.

  40. Hi Angus,

I have a dc19 and just got an anti tangle tool (with the red buttons), which doesn’t fit.

Is there an adaptor that will work?

  41. i have bought a cy23 dyson ball allergy. I want to fit my old dc20 tools. What adaptor do i have to purchase?

  42. You’ll not find an adaptor for DC20 tools.

  43. I have dc14 attachments and want to use on dc33 is there an adapter for that? Thank you

  44. You want this one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B06XDL7MCG

  45. Great site!I have came across lots of confusing & contradictions regarding Dyson adapters, lots of mixed reviews, many claiming they were told the part would fit and did not. It was by chance I came across your website 🙂
I have a DC08, are there any adapters which would allow the use of DC07 tools with the aluminum telescopic part and also be able to use the hose wand also with DC07 tools. Would I need two adapters or just one?

    Thank you

  46. Apologies for not explaining clearly about the aluminum telescopic part. I should have said this is on the DC08. Can this be amended so not to confuse anyone looking for the same parts

    Thank you

Can I get an adaptor so I can use newer Cinetic tools on my older DC08 animal?

  48. Angus Black on May 5th, 2020 at 7:28 pm

Not enough information. It depends which DC08 and which Cinetic tools. Ask at dysonforums.com and post photos of the tool fittings of both there.

  49. Hi Dysonmedic,

Please could you advise which adapter I need to buy… I have an old (but trustworthy) DC05 (standard yellow model) and would like to get a turbo head / mini turbine head in order to clean our carpets etc. more easily.

I’ve read around and found a number of different sites reporting different compatibilities. I am assuming that some sites assume you will use an adapter but they don’t tell you which one. eg. Genuine Purple Dyson Mini Turbine Head (https://shop.manchestervacs.co.uk/dyson-upright-vacuum-cleaner-spares/dc14-spares/purple-turbo-tool): Manchestervacs say it will only fit the DC08 or DC19. Whilst this ebay seller (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-Purple-Dyson-Mini-Turbine-Head-for-DC04-DC05-DC07-DC08-DC11-DC14/392775032160?hash=item5b73375d60:g:CmkAAOSwHb9eqyZY) says it will fit the DC05.

Likewise, this ebay seller (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Twin-Turbo-Vacuum-Brush-Turbine-For-DYSON-DC05-DC11-Hoover-Tool/262496160483?_trkparms=aid%3D1110006%26algo%3DHOMESPLICE.SIM%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D225114%26meid%3De0dba3dbf58a48bf884966ba2f8328cd%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D6%26rkt%3D12%26mehot%3Dpf%26sd%3D164256120692%26itm%3D262496160483%26pmt%3D1%26noa%3D0%26pg%3D2047675%26algv%3DSimplAMLv5PairwiseWebWithBBEV1Filter%26brand%3DDyson&_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851) claims it will fit a DC05 but i spotted that the neck of the connector is not right for a DC05 so it must mean that an adaptor is required.

I also came across this item: Dyson 915034-01 Mini Turbine Head Universal for All Dyson (https://www.dyson.co.uk/support/journey/spare-details.915034-01.html). Dyson confirm it’s compatible but provides an adapter or sorts but offering the picture up to my DC05 I don’t think it would be of any use.

I’d be really grateful if you could advise and also if you have any experience on the different turbo heads that could be used (with or without adapter) that would be great.

  50. The two DC08/19 ones are no good for your machine. The one you linked on eBay are no good and have very poor performance. The Dyson one will fit but you will find that mini turbo head much cheaper on ebay if you use teh part number.
