Dyson DC04 Wand Cap & Spring Fitting Tutorial

We had a couple of emails recently asking how to fit a wand cap and/or a top end cap spring to a Dyson DC04.

As with many jobs on Dyson vacuum cleaners, it is very simple when someone shows you how. The end cap (top cap) is the bit on the very top of the handle wand that swivels to allows you to fit a tool on there. The tools fit both on the end of the wand handle and also on the end of the hose itself. The spring-loaded end cap is there to cover the end of the tube when you are using your Dyson to hoover the floor.

Here is the email we received recently:

Could you please help me to help to get my OAP mother out of a pickle, she has a dyson DC04 and she don’t know how or why, but she has lost the wand end cap and spring, my sister has bought new ones from Manchester Vacs online, but I don’t know how to fit them, so I was wondering if you would be kind enough to e-mail me some instructions please ??

Well, we can do better than e-mailing instructions. It’s easier that we do questions like this on the blog here, so others can benefit from it in the future.

I am assuming you have the DC04 in front of you without the wand cap and spring in place right now.

First, locate the spring in the holes on each side:

Observe the direction the kink in the spring sits. Make sure you get it the right way round.

Then, look at your wand cap. There is a ridge running down the centre on the inside. That ridge has a little nick in it. See the photo below:

The end cap fits onto its round locating lugs with your fingers. You simply expand it a little to locate it on the lugs as you fit it. Be sure not to disturb the spring from its little holes as you do so.

Having fitted it, all you need to do now is locate the spring in the little nick. You do this by placing a screwdriver carefully from above like so:

Push the spring down the ridge until it locates into the little nick. It will snap in. Check the spring is level and not at a tilt at either side. If it is, manipulate it straight using your screwdriver, taking care it stays in the slot.

That’s it! Your spring is fitted.

Thank you. Very good straight forward instructions that worked 1st time. Wish all instructions were as good. Thank you.

  2. We bought a second hand DC04 years ago, and didn’t even realise the cap had a spring missing, until searching for means of getting into the switch mechanism to repair a fractured cable, and i spotted it on a parts list. Your tutorial most helpful, my Dyson now works perfectly!

  3. Hi great tutorial.
The top of my DC04 wand does not look exactly like that in you tutorial. Firstly it has no holes for the spring and secondly it has no slots cut in the top edge.
    Please advise.

  4. Some early ones don’t have a spring, they lock with a cog/groove type arrangement instead.

Most DC04’s don’t have those dual slots in the top, but they do not affect the top anyway.

If you change your top, you must get one of the correct type. It sounds like you have an early model that doesn’t need a spring

  5. Excellant instructions, so good only took 2 minites to do by following diagrams step by step.
    Many Thanks

  6. Easy to follow instructions after I spent ages trying to refit, many thanks, Mike

    Many thanks.
    You’re a star.

  8. Great instructions, really clear – it would be brilliant if you could share how to replace the same part on the DC07.
I’ve bought a replacement wand cap/slide cover for it, but I can’t figure out how to fit it!
    Hope you can help.
    Many thanks

  9. Do you have any instructions you could email me on how to fit the blue sliding wand cap on a DC07.
    Any help much appraciated.
    Thanks

  10. It is covered in the workshop manual.

  11. The end of our cap spring snapped and the spring was found on carpet.
Didn’t at first realise that the end had broken off, until I tried to refit the thing.
Ordered replacement spring and then spent a frustrating half hour trying to get it fitted. OH didn’t like my workmanship – so discovered your excellent pictures and instructions.
    The light switched on !!

Fitted as described, in about 30 seconds.

Best instructions I’ve ever read, I’m extremely grateful.
    Thank you very much.
